John Shepherd
The first members of the Shepherd family to come to Australia were John and his wife Eliza, nee Ryman. John and Eliza were married in London on 28 November 1852 at St Mary Lambeth Church, pictured at left. Their residence was given as High Street, John's father is John Shepherd, a labourer of Aldenham Hertfordshire and Eliza's is Benjamin, a farmer. John junior was baptised on 13 July 1828 at Elstree Hertforshire and Eliza was born Great Barrington in Gloucestershire.
The couple arrived in Australia on the Plantaganet in 1853. However, on John's death in 1866 his death certificate states tthat his parents' names were John Shepherd and Eliza Appleyard. The certificate incorrectly states his birthplace as Herefordshire, when it should be Hertfordshire. The couple can be placed definitely in Sydney by 4 September 1854 when John paid a deposit of £10 for his brother George, then aged 25 and his wife Elizabeth, 27, nee Broadbody, to emigrate to Australia. George and Elizabeth arrived on the Lloyds on 1 August 1855. A third brother, Francis, arrived on the Washington Irving on 27 September 1857.
John was a butcher in Darling Road Balmain and he died young, on 15 January 1866. Eliza married twice more. In 1868 she moved to Newstead Station at Inverell NSW where she worked as a domestic and married, firstly to George McLennan on 15 January 1880 and later, John Thornton Slater on 16 May 1891. She died on 23 July 1902 at Cottage Homes Parramatta.
John and Eliza's children were Frederick born c.1852, John, born 1 August 1857, Francis George, born 5 October 1859.
