John Dugan (called Doogen or Doogan in some records) was born c.1814 in Co. Mayo Ireland, the son of Patrick Dugan and Mary Cassidy. He was my great-great-grandfather. He died at his residence, Barcom Glen Paddington on 13 February 1873 aged 58 years. His widow is shown as Mary Bowen and his children as James, 33, John, 28, Mary 26, living and l male deceased. He was then a tanner living at Barcom Glen Paddington and the death was registered by his son James of Hopewell Street Paddington.
In 1829, according to the rent roll of Sir Richard O’Donel, a John Doogan was a tenant on the O’Donel Estate near Newport Town County Mayo on the Townland of Leharrow Beg paying £8/1/7 per year rent for his holding.
On 24 July 1833 at Mayo Assizes, he was tried and convicted with eight others on a charge of administering an unlawful oath to James Gibbons, who was staying at the house of James Bourke that night. His occupation was net maker.
John arrived on Parmelia (2) (on 2 March 1834 (sailed from Cork 29 October 1833), was aged 20, was single, and could read and write
On 13 July 1841 John Dugan married Mary Bowen (also born in Ireland) at St. Patrick’s Church Parramatta.
His height was 5’8”,complexion sallow and freckled. Red hair, grey eyes, mole left side upper lip. Breast, arms and hands freckled. Scar on back forefinger of left hand. Brown scar on right shin.
